With unemployment in Memphis once again hovering around 10 percent and putting a strain on state benefits, the number of people just throwing in the towel when it comes to finding work is growing. But, Garen Haddad, President of the 30-year old Gateway group personnel company in East Memphis, says don't give up. Get real about the approach you use and the resources you have to help find the opportunity that best suits your talents.
"What you should really do create a resume that speaks to those opportunities. Pulling out of your background those aspects that mirror the opportunity that's of interest."
Haddad's company has the numbers to back up his advice. Running both an executive search and temporary staffing divisions, Gateway is finding jobs for 80 to 100 clients a week in para-professional, office administrative positions and customer service. So, maybe you might have turned your nose up at taking a "Girl Friday" temp secretary gig? Well, the times they are a'changing in a streamlined workplace.
"We've seen a big up tick with companies using staff labor to help bridge the gap and really that temporary staffing resource can be a good idea for job-seeking professionals to identify employers, if not only for the long term, the interim."
You might get lucky enough to get one of those eventual 275 high-paying jobs at the newly opened Mitsubishi transformer plant. But, if you don't, it isn't the end of the world.
Haddad says, "Keep your expectations realistic. Whenever possible identify those positions that's appropriate and giving you enough opportunity to get your foot in the door with an employer to showcase your skills."
The greatest asset for a job-seeker is tenacity. You can't win the prize if you choose to stop trying.
"Realize that "no" is
part of the process", he said. "Too often I hear folks that are in between jobs
and they kind of give up. They get beaten down. The next "no" might
be the last "no" before the opportunity presents itself."
A position is better than no position and if you perform your employers will notice that and give you the growth opportunity you're looking at.
