It is the Make a Wish Foundation at its finest, going above and beyond to help make a sick valley boy's dream come true.

Darrius Lee is just 6-years-old and his whole life he's battled the life-threatening sickle cell disease, but on Saturday, he wasn't thinking about his sickness -- he got to be a hero.

Lee knows what he wants.

"I want to keep the world safe," he said.

That's why he wants to grow up and be a police officer.

"His wish is to be a police officer, eat doughnuts and catch bad guys," said Make a Wish Arizona's Laura Mitchell.

But instead of catching bad guys, he fights sickle cell disease daily, but not on this day thanks to the Make a Wish Foundation and the Phoenix Police Department.  He's an officer, flying in a helicopter to spot crime and even eating doughnuts with his police pals.

"He's learned how to handcuff somebody the right way and he's having fun to which is part of the job as well, so he's going to do very, very well as a police officer," said Cmdr. T.J. Martin.

"I just want to say thank you.  I've been out in Arizona for 20 plus years and this right here.. I've never felt this much love from the community," said Darrius' mother, Andrea Lee.

Darrius is one of 300 Arizona kids that get their dream come true and dozens of people came to watch it all unfold Saturday.

A staged scene at Chase Field leads Darrius and his police partners chasing down pretend bad guys who kidnapped his brother and using his new police skills, he handcuffed each of them.

"I think this right here will give him something to aspire to, that he might pay attention more to drinking his water and taking care of his health so he can volunteer or do something.  You never know, anything can happen.  He might be able to be one," said Andrea.

"It's a wonderful wish and I like all the good actions," said Darrius.

The good actions of a hero and a wish come true -- perhaps just the best kind of medicine.

The Make a Wish Foundation grants hundreds of wishes to children facing life-threatening illnesses and the first wish was actually granted right here in Arizona back in 1980 -- to a boy who also got to be a police officer for a day.
