Police SUV struck on LSD as officer conducts crash traffic control

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A young woman suffered a sprained ankle and possibly a broken leg when she rear-ended a Chicago Police SUV that was stopped on Lake Shore Drive in the Lakeview neighborhood Saturday morning as an officer conducted traffic control around a previous accident.

The first accident happened about 7:24 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Lake Shore Drive, just south of the Belmont Avenue entrance ramp, according to police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli. That single-vehicle accident involved an SUV, Mirabelli said. A CPD traffic car went to the scene to handle the crash, and a Belmont District officer in a CPD SUV also responded, to protect the scene and conduct traffic control, Mirabelli said.

The Belmont District officer was outside the SUV directing traffic away from the first crash about 7:36 a.m., when a 25-year-old woman driving a car southbound on Lake Shore Drive struck the rear of the police SUV, Mirabelli said.

The police SUV had some damage to its back end, while the car had significant front-end damage. The woman behind the wheel of the car was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, with a sprained ankle and possibly a leg fracture, Mirabelli said. Her condition was reported to be stable.

Neither the investigating officer or the one conducting traffic control were injured, Mirabelli said.

Police did not have any immediate information on the condition of the driver of the SUV from the original crash.
