U.S. Congressman Steve Cohen (D-Memphis) wants the federal government to take another look at marijuana laws.
Rep. Cohen has proposed a bill that would create a commission to study federal pot laws. Such issues as taxation, health risks, medical uses, and criminality would be studied.
Congressman Cohen said now is the time to enact some "common sense laws" with nearly half the states passing some sort of medical or full legalization laws.
"The federal government laws haven't changed," he said. "In fact it has marijuana listed as one of the most, if not the most, serious category of drug that exists. So there's a real need for a study, a rational logical analysis of what our country's future should be."
Rep. Cohen also says he thinks the political climate is right to get bi-partisan support for this bill.
