500 to 1000 homes along Chain O’ Lakes could flood

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A flood warning remains in effect for the Des Plaines River and others in northeastern Illinois, as officials and residents prepare for flooding in the coming days.

Residents along the Des Plaines River should expect moderate to major flooding through next week, while those along Chain O' Lakes can expect moderate flooding.

The basement of Libertyville High School had become flooded with several feet of water Thursday, prompting staff to cancel classes. Officials had discovered a pipe had burst, though, they were not sure if it was connected to the flooding. A nearby lake was to blame for the flooding in the school's parking lot.

With Lake County in a state of emergency, the village of Gurnee is encouraging residents on Emerald Street, Kilbourn Road, and Old Grand Avenue to leave the area.

Lake County Emergency Management Coordinator Kent McKenzie said the water level around the Des Plaines River at Route 120 has seen a nearly 3-foot rise.

"I came here from emergency management in North Carolina and the amount of rain we had this morning is comparable to what we'd see there in a hurricane," McKenzie says.

A statement from the village of Gurnee advises motorists to avoid travel unless necessary. No mandatory evacuation has been issued at this time.
