BRIGHTON, Mich. (WJBK) -

One local family is relieved to be back home together after their vacation in Boston.  Mom ran in the race while dad and daughter cheered.  They describe their frightening moments after the explosions.

Twelve-year-old Paige picked out mom with her green shirt and pink socks and took a quick picture.  Mom was running strong at the 25 mile mark in the Boston Marathon.

"So I saw them at Mile 25.  I thought, well, great, they'll start working their way toward the finish line afterwards," said Julie Cauvin.

She finished with an excellent time of three hours, 40 minutes.  She had seen Paige and husband Dave only one mile back.

"A good friend of ours, John, said they must be at the finish line.  That's the best place to be.  That's where all the excitement is," Julie said.

But 20 minutes after she finished, the explosions happened.

"It was more chaos.  It was people running around screaming names and crying," Julie said.

Julie could not find Paige and Dave, and they couldn't find her.

"I remember we were sitting about a block or two away from the finish line, and we heard, like, boom, boom," Paige said.

"The medics and the volunteers were amazing how they all jumped in," Julie said.

"I saw a woman come running, and she was just crying, and it was really sad," Paige said.  "Then ambulances just came rushing and rushing."

Still Paige and dad could not find Julie.  All three were worried sick.

"That was probably the scariest part is because I didn't know if she was in that, and then I heard people saying that there was an explosion," Paige said.

Then Paige told dad she spotted mom.

"I saw her, and I just ran," Paige explained.  "Said, 'You okay?'  And she said, 'Yeah.'

"I just grabbed Paige, and I just cried.  I just cried when I grabbed her because I was so happy," Julie said.

"We're counting our lucky stars.  We were very blessed that we're still together, and we feel very sad, and we've been praying for the people's lives who have been changed forever from some horrific bomb that some senseless person decided to let off," Dave said.

Julie's time qualified her for Boston next year.  All three say they will return to watch mom run.
