Doctor: Lives Were Saved Due To Rapid Response

Posted: Updated:

Massachusetts General Hospital's Chief of Emergency Services, Dr. Alasdair Conn and Chief of Trauma Surgery, Dr. George Velmahos, held a brief news conference Tuesday morning with the purpose of updating the media on the condition of those injured in Monday's marathon blasts.

Over the last 24 hours, their hospital treated 34 patients.  12 patients were admitted.  The remaining 22 patients were evaluated, treated and released or transferred to another clinic for their eye injuries.

Of the 12 patients that were admitted, Dr. Velmahos stated that all are in rather stable condition.   8 patients are in the most severe of conditions and have undergone major operations, including amputations.

The doctor said that the bombs produced "devastating effects."  Many of the wounds are severe and to the lower extremities.  Several patients had metallic fragments such as nail-like particles and pellets entered their bodies.

"Thank God they are all alive," stated Dr. Velmahos.

The patients, all of which were spectators, ranged in age from 28 to 71 years of age.

The doctor added that due to the rapid response following the bombing, lives were saved.
