Alpharetta police officer shot, suspect killed

ALPHARETTA, Ga. -

An Alpharetta police officer is recovering after being shot five times by a man who led authorities on a chase Friday night.  Officer David Freeman remains hospitalized in stable condition, and investigators say an innocent bystander was also hit by gunfire.

According to police, Officer Freeman pulled the suspect over for a tag violation on his vehicle just after 8:30 p.m. near the 200 block of South Main Street in Alpharetta.  That's when the driver opened fire and fled the scene, prompting a police chase.

Police say more shots were fired during the chase, and a woman driving on Alpharetta Highway was hit by a bullet as the suspect was shooting at pursuing officers.  Four police cruisers were also struck by gunfire during the chase.

The suspect's vehicle crashed on Ga. 400 southbound just north of Northridge Road.   Gordon said the suspect then got out of the vehicle and opened fire on officers.  Officers returned fire, and the suspect was killed.

The suspect has been identified as 52-year-old Curtis Hicks of Marietta.

Alpharetta Police spokesperson George Gordon said Officer David Freeman was struck five times by gunfire.  He was hit in the leg, lower abdomen, right arm, shoulder, and he was also grazed on the back by a bullet.  The woman, who has not been identified, was shot in the hip.

Both Officer Freeman and the woman were taken to North Fulton Medical Center.   Officer Freeman remained in stable condition on Saturday.  The woman's condition has not been released.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the incident.
