Choosing and planting your vegetables

ATLANTA -

FOX 5 Storm Team chief meteorologist Ken Cook joined Pike Nurseries assistant manager Melodie McDanal with some great tips on choosing, planting and taking care of your vegetables!

Getting Your Vegetable Bed Ready to Plant

Location:
All vegetables, fruit and herbs need an area that receives full sun.

Soil
Vegetables, fruit and herbs all need a good nutrient, rich soil to thrive. If planting in the ground you must amend our dense red clay. Amending the soil helps to break it up so roots can grow more easily and provides better drainage.

If planting in a new area you'll want to till the area and mix in thirds:
1. Native Soil
2. Foothills Compost really breaks up the soil.

Garden Soil
If the area has been used before, mix the native soil at a 50/50 ratio with Pike Vegetable & Flower Mix. If planting in pots use a potting mix.

How to Plant
The general rule of thumb is to dig a hole 2 times the height and width of the pot the plant is in. Using the native soil that is mixed at a 50/50 ratio with Pike Planting Mix, put enough soil back into the hole so that the bottom of the hole is about the height of the pot. Next, place a handful of a plant starter fertilizer in the hole. Remove the plant from the plastic pot and place it in the center of the hole. Use the remaining soil mixture to fill in around the plant. Sprinkle another handful of plant starter around the plant. Tap around the plant to condense the soil a bit to remove air pockets.

Choosing Your Vegetables, Fruit and Herbs

There are a huge variety of tomatoes from small cherry tomatoes, yellow tomatoes to big beefy tomatoes for sandwiches. Be sure to put a cage on your tomato plants to ensure you're tomatoes won't be sitting on the ground. If planting in a pot use a very large pot since tomatoes have an extensive root system.

Peppers
You can choose from bell type peppers, banana peppers or spicy jalapeño peppers great for home-made salsa.

Zucchini & Squash
These are vining vegetable. If you have enough space grow in the garden. If you're short on space grow them vertically by training them on a stake.

Blueberries are great to add into your landscape for year-round interest.

NEW 'Jelly Bean' Blueberry
