SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

More than a billion people across the world don't have access to clean drinking water. In Honduras, many have to walk a long way just to find water that's clean and safe to use.

That's why a group of students founded the National Student Water Association at Wayne State to raise awareness and help address this urgent problem.

"The water that they drink, they have to walk miles and hours just to bring back a jug that would last a couple days," says junior Rashid Al-Mahdi.

"This is real life for these people, it's not like this is just a one-day thing. This is real life. It kind of humbles you a little bit," says senior Muhamad Chbib.

From March 7th to the 14th, they spent their spring break digging trenches, connecting pipes and installing a system that will deliver clean water.

"When you think about water, it's just like an unlimited resource. That's how we see it. But over there, it's just so scarce," says junior Ali Mourad.

"We have such a comfortable lifestyle that these individuals just don't have," says junior Ali Abdallah.

The students raised the money for this trip -- about $1,500 per person --  on their own. They traveled with the student-lead group The Global Water Brigade.

So many lessons came out of this journey, an eye-opening and life-changing experience for these young men, who plan to be doctors and engineers in the future.

"People around the world are dying from small things like diarrhea and parasites just because they don't have access to clean water," said junior Abess Makki.

"It's made me so much more humanitarian," added Abdallah. "It made me want to go into projects specifically for humanitarian efforts."

The students are hoping to travel to Ghana next year to help fix the water system there.
