When it comes to a brand of clothing, no one is bigger than Nike. From footwear to apparel to, well you name it, they make it.
Moving that much product is no simple task and Memphis has always been a key element in that undertaking. Now a huge expansion at the Nike Northridge Center in Raleigh-Frayser will be another giant leap into the future for Nike and Memphis.
"Well, it's still the distribution center of America but I think we're going more towards supply chain because that's what we do," said Willie Gregory of Nike Memphis. "We supply consumers with our product and we could not think of a better place to put it here in Memphis. Everyone here has been very very helpful in keeping the distribution center here and I can't say enough about the collaboration effort that's been done between the organizations here in our city.
Movers are already working on a concrete plant that will handle the huge amount of concrete that's going to be poured in an almost 1.7.million square foot expansion of the Nike plant.
With the expansion will come more jobs.
"They will be quite a few probably between 100-200 jobs that will be added," Gregory said. "But a good thing for Memphis and the Mid-South is we've stayed right here since 1982, which is over 30 years. We're staying right here another 30 years."
There are currently four Nike locations in the Memphis area but when this expansion is complete the Memphis Nike presence will be consolidated into just two locations.
The Northridge Distribution Center expansion is expected to be completed by June 2014.
