DETROIT (WJBK) -

Judge Greg Mathis grew up on the streets of Detroit.  He was in a gang and even did some jail time.  However, he became one of the most popular judges on daytime television.

So how did this street kid go from Detroit's gangs to Hollywood?

"When I was a street kid, what changed my life was a gang summit that was held by Mayor Young and his administration," said Mathis.

He now wants to help his friend Benny Napoleon become mayor and take care of Detroit's number one problem.

"The number one challenge is crime.  The number one person who has been able to deal with crime in this region has been Benny Napoleon," Mathis said.

"He has a community center here, and he's always in the community doing things to help make this community better," said Napoleon.

For a guy from Detroit that travels all over the world, the judge gets asked often what the city is really like.

"It's viewed as an impoverished city that has a lot of challenges," said Mathis.

Challenges like working with an emergency manager.  The judge is skeptical.

"If the emergency manager is bringing $300 million to $500 million to town with him, I suppose it might be beneficial," he said.

However, Mathis has not given up on Detroit and credits the city's training and educational programs toward his success.

"Were it not for those things, I might be dead, in prison or strung out on drugs like most of my friends I grew up with are," he said.
