TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A former Amphitheater Unified School District teacher faces nearly three years in prison after being sentenced on convictions for having sexual conduct with students.

Melissa Ann Dalton had taught at Ironwood Ridge High School in Oro Valley for less than a year when she was arrested in April 2012 after school police resource officers learned of allegations against her.

She pleaded guilty to one count of sexual conduct with a minor and two counts of attempted sexual conduct with a minor.

The Arizona Daily Star reports that Dalton sobbed as she apologized during her sentencing Monday.

She asked if she could speak directly to the victims' families, but Pima County Superior Court Judge Christopher Browning refused.

Browning said the case was avoidable and that Dalton's actions created multiple victims.
