Sky Train opens to Sky Harbor travelers Monday

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

The public will get its first crack Monday at traveling on an automated inter-terminal train at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Passengers can begin riding the PHX Sky Train at noon Monday.

The driverless train will connect airport passengers between Terminal 4, the East Economy parking lot and the Metro light-rail station at 44th and Washington streets.

Trains will arrive and depart every three to four minutes and operate 24 hours a day and year-round at no charge.

Sky Train stations will have boarding pass kiosks, pet parks, and will allow anyone flying Southwest or US Airways to check their bags at the station for free.

Early bag check is also available at the East Economy station.

In addition, a cell-phone waiting lot will be available for people picking up travelers at the 44th Street Station.

It's the first phase of a $1.5 billion project.

Officials plan for the train to extend to Terminal 3 with a walkway to Terminal 2 by early 2015 and, in its final state, connect it to the airport's rental car center.
