How do you 'kill' that musical ear worm?

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

This is something that's happened to most of us: you're going through your day, you hear a song on the radio, and then you just can't get it out of your head for hours.

So what do you do about it? One recent study found some answers. Research from Western Washington University found the songs people know and like become the most intrusive.

So how do you get it "un-stuck," so to speak?

"What we do after we listen to music matters for whether or not that music is going to come back into your head," Dr. Ira Hyman, the lead researcher, told us via Skype.

He and his fellow researchers found the best way to keep intrusive songs out of consciousness, like from Lady Gaga, is to get busy on a meaningful task, but not too busy. Try a puzzle such as a five-letter anagram.

"It could be any sort of word puzzles, or reading a book you really like, or engaging in conversation is probably less likely to have music in your head," Hyman said.

Hyman said in surveys they've done Lady Gaga songs and Carly Rae Jepson's "Call Me Maybe" have come up as popular songs to get stuck in your head. But he said the reason for that is because at the time they were getting a lot of airplay.

Robert De Niro says Tribeca Film Festival is his passion

Robert De Niro is a family man, a filmmaker, an entrepreneur and one of my favorite actors of all time. He's also a co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival, which has more to see than ever before. De Niro wears just as many hats on screen as he does in real life. The father of six starred in six films last year, owns four restaurants and a hotel, and still finds time each spring for the Tribeca Film Festival, Lower Manhattan's annual cinematic showcase.
