ATLANTA -

The Philadelphia Phillies are turning to pitcher Cole Hamels to set the tone Monday night as the team opens the MLB season against the Atlanta Braves.

FOX 29's Howard Eskin reported live from Atlanta on FOX 29 News at 5 p.m. as the two teams were set to warm up before the 7:10 p.m. first pitch.

Eskin says he has received reports that Hamels has shaved off his mustache. The pitcher had not yet taken the field at the time of Eskin's 5 p.m. report.

Last week, Hamels told MLB.com being named the opening day pitcher was "an honor."

"A lot of great pitchers have had that honor, and to be one of them, it's something I will cherish," Hamels said.

The Phillies are coming off a disappointing 2012 season, where the team managed to post a .500 record but only a 33-39 record against NL East opponents.

Offensively, the team was 19th overall in runs and 15th overall in batting average.

The Phillies have Tuesday off and return to the field to finish off the three game series on Wednesday and Thursday.

On Friday, the Phillies are back at Citizens Bank Park for the home opener at 4:05 p.m.
