Think Twice About Selling Old Smartphones

Posted: Updated:

When it comes to reselling smartphones, the smart thing to do is to erase any personal information on the phone. But one tech expert says that may not be enough.

Computer forensics expert Mark Lanterman says "delete" doesn't always mean delete.

Lanterman knows how to mine an old phone for information; so well that police and the FBI will go to him to dig evidence out of recovered phones.

Out of six volunteered cell phones, Lanterman was able to find everything from Facebook log-ins to Social Security numbers.

Lanterman may be an expert, but he says anyone can learn to mine information like he did. He advises never to donate or sell your old smartphones, because you can't tell if your phone will really erase your information based on make or model.
