Downtown Memphis will be difficult to get in and out of on the north end on Saturday in advance of Saturday afternoon's Ku Klux Klan rally and an anti-Klan rally earlier in the day.
Police have planned to shut down access to streets bordering Poplar Avenue, North Fourth Street, Jefferson Avenue and North Front Street.
There will only be one way into the zone for the rallies the police have designated, an alley on North Fourth Street between Jefferson and Adams avenues. Every person attending the KKK rally is required to go through the security checkpoint. All persons will be searched before entering. No weapons are allowed.
Rally protestors will be allowed to demonstrate in the specified area located at Jefferson/ Adams. Protestors will not be allowed to protest in any other area within the protest boundaries.
The Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan will hold their rally at 140 Adams Ave., at the corner of Adams and Third, from 1:30-4 p.m.
Prior to the Klan rally, a group called Power to the People, will host an anti-Klan rally on the east side of North Third Street between 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Due to the road closures, MATA Transit Memphis Area Transit Authority will detour several bus routes that funnel through the Civic Center Plaza, including the Main Street, Madison Avenue and Riverfront trolley lines. The detours will last through 6 p.m. Saturday.
Detouring routes will use Danny Thomas Boulevard to and from the North End Terminal. A shuttle on Front Street will connect the NET and Central Station to assist passengers in transport in the downtown area.
Routes that will be affected are: 2, 4, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 17, 19, 20, 34, 36, 39, 43, 50, 52, 53, 56, 57.
