Wounded warrior bike ride therapeutic for veterans

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -

The Wounded Warrior Project has always focused on what wounded soldiers can do, not what they can't do. This weekend, they'll be hitting the bike paths of metro Atlanta for an exhilarating ride.

Any rider will tell you there's nothing like a bike ride, but for these soldiers it goes beyond the physical.

For retired Army veteran J. D. Greer, it felt good to get back on a bike.

"Most of the people in the military, we've always been athletic. And then that stops for a short period of time while we recover from our injuries," said Greer.

Greer had his arm amputated below the elbow. An adapter allows Greer to connect himself to the bike, allowing him to ride.

"Any bike for any person. It doesn't matter if they're missing a leg or missing a hand, post-traumatic stress disorder, whatever the case may be," said Dan Schnock of Soldier Ride.

Greer and dozens of other veterans are participating in Soldier Ride. It's a unique four-day cycling opportunity for wounded warriors to use cycling to overcome physical, mental, or emotional wounds.

"You get a chance when these warriors are out here, together a group of 50, they lower their defenses, they get a chance to talk to each other and they can tell stories and understand those stories," said Schnock.

They will ride 10 miles in Stone Mountain on one day, and 26 miles the next.

"They get to see the nature, be a part of the culture, but also engage each other. And that to me is the best part, while they're doing a bit of physical fitness," Schnock said.

But for veterans, the ride helps body and mind.

"It helps out a lot for self-esteem, confidence and keeping yourself healthy, so you have a good quality of life," Greer said.

Soldier rides have already taken place in Washington DC, Miami, Chicago and New York.
