Theatre Memphis Announces 2013-14 Season

Posted: Updated:

Theatre Memphis has decided on its play selection for the 2013-14 season and it includes a variety of entertainment that touches many bases. Featuring musicals, comedy, drama, classics and new works, the season offers options to Memphis patrons.

The 411 seat Lohrey Stage will begin the season with The Royal Family, a comedy roughly based on the lives of the most famous theatrical family of the time. Three generations struggle with fame, ego and career-altering decisions as they hit outrageous roadbumps and a daily fare of hilarious mix-ups. The next production on the Lohrey Stage will be Broadway hit, Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein. A MidSouth premiere production on this wickedly inspired musical comedy based on the cult movie of the same name. The drama by Arthur Miller, Death of a Salesman, follows next in line on the Lohrey Stage with one of the most famous characters in American theater history, Willie Loman as a tortured soul looking for a better life for his wife and sons.  The popular and groundbreaking rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar commands the middle of the season with its heart-pounding beats and rhythmic ballads that meld contemporary attitudes and iconic allusions to modern life. Following the form of a traditional Passion Play, this musical is loosely based on the Gospel's account of the last week of the life of Jesus. The beloved and ageless comedy Harvey, follows as Elwood P. Dowd and his six foot invisible rabbit friend wreck havoc on his family. By the end of the show this comedy of errors may prove that Elwood and Harvey are the most sane characters around. The season finale on the Lohrey Stage is the musical The Music Man. This classic feel good musical contains songs like 76 Trombones and ‘Til There Was You. The family favorite, A Christmas Carol, will be performed as a special holiday offering in December for the 36th consecutive year at Theatre Memphis with Barry Fuller returning once again to portray Ebenezer Scrooge.

The Next Stage season includes Proof  by David Auburn, a Pulitzer Prize winner for Drama. A young girl watches as her mathematical genius of a father succumbs to mental illness and after his death must make his work and her discoveries accountable to maintain her own mental stability. A musical parody hit is scheduled as the second Next Stage show with the hilarious send up of Broadway and theater inside jokes with The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!) . Next on the schedule is William Shakespeare's pastoral comedy, As You Like It, which follows the delightful heroine, Rosalind, who flees her father's court to travel and search for love. The final offering on the Next Stage for 2013-14 will be the regional premiere of The Submission. Raw and unsentimental, this sometimes fiercely funny play exposes prejudices among young artists that one might think more liberal and progressive. A white male playwright is faced with producing the fictitious African-American female under whose name he invented and submitted to be considered for a national competition.
