1 Student Arrested, 6 Disciplined In High School Swastika Incident

Perkiomen Valley High School students may be on break this week, but there's a buzz around town about an ethnic intimidation incident involving several students at the sprawling school.

Parents in the community are upset.

"We need to build bridges, not walls," Paul Black told FOX 29.

"It's very disappointing because this area is a very safe area, people are very well educated," added Christen MacQueen, another parent playing with her children at a nearby park.

State police say a 14-year-old student from nearby Trappe has been charged with ethnic intimidation, criminal mischief and harassment after he allegedly drew swastikas on another 14-year-old student's health paper back on March 15th.

He was arrested Tuesday. The student was disciplined immediately.

"Our grandfathers fought a war to get us out of all that kind of nonsense," Black said. "These kids are gonna' try to keep it alive, that's ridiculous."

"I definitely think they should be kicked out of the school, depending upon how severe it is," added MacQueen, who says her daughter was the target of bullying in the past.

After the initial incident, school officials say six other students continued the intimidation in school. State Police were contacted when it became clear this was not an isolated incident between two students. The six other students were also disciplined. The school has an extensive anti-bullying program in place.

"They're big on the bullying program," one parent said.

"We try to encourage our kids to treat each other well and fairly. To treat people the way you want to be treated," Black explained.

Mark Safa owns Divino's Pizza across from the school. Many students eat there every day. He says kids here are normally well behaved and friendly. He was surprised to hear about the swastikas.

"That's bad for the nice name of the high school here and very good teachers. And nice people in the area. I'm surprised," he said.

School officials did not identify the students or give specific details on the incident. It's unclear if other students could face charges.

School officials called this an "unfortunate episode" and said programs are in place to prevent this type of behavior and encourage positive interaction between students.
