RALEIGH, Tenn. (FOX13) -

On Wednesday evening, an off duty Memphis Police officer working secondary employment in MPD uniform at 3950 Austin Peay, Wal-Mart, observed an unknown male shoplifting. The officer followed the suspect out of the store when he flagged down two on duty officers.

The preliminary investigation revealed the officers attempted to speak with the suspect who was irate and refusing to comply with officers repeated commands. The suspect assaulted one officer and a struggle ensued between the suspect and all officers. After trying to detain the suspect with hands and asp baton, the suspect reached inside of his waistband as if he was concealing a weapon. The suspect was given verbal commands to show his hands, but he refused to comply. The suspect made a sudden move spinning towards officers. One officer fired one round from his department issued weapon striking the suspect.

The suspect, who has not been identified, was transported by ambulance to the Regional Medical Center where he is currently listed in critical condition.

Two officers sustained minor injuries but were not hospitalized.

The names of the officers involved will not be released until they have been debriefed.

The officer that fired his weapon has been routinely relieved of duty with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.
