In Michigan is there a case of accidental voter fraud?

LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) -

Republicans have been belly-aching for years about Democrats trying to steal elections over the years.  And in some cases with good cause.  Who hasn't heard the horror stories out of Chi-town where the mantra is: Vote early.  Vote often.  And where dead folks show up at the polls all the time.

But Michigan has never been Chicago yet the howls from the GOP ranks continues.

Enter the debate one Ruth Johnson, Secretary of State.  She is a card-carrying conservative Republican and the chief election officer in the state.  Either knowingly or unwillingly she poked a huge hole in the GOP contention that Democrats are engaged in fraudulent voting activities in this state, too.

Is it widespread madam Secretary?

"I don't believe it is widespread," she confesses.

 Poof.

Are there some persons who are voting who should not be?

Yes, she observes.  She sights a recent PEW study suggesting that Michigan has more voters registered than there are citizens in the state. Or another federal analysis that shows 20 counties have more folks voting than reside in those counties.

So there is indeed something going on out there, but Ms. Johnson thinks a lot of it is traced to well-intended non-citizens incorrectly registering to vote.

The Secretary describes this scene:  A non- citizen shows up to get a driver's license and is asked by this very official looking person behind the counter if he or she wants to register to vote.  The federal government says the question must be asked.

Ms. Johnson thinks these folks figure they better sign up and they do and then they vote, illegally.

She would like to clean up this situation but contends the feds won't help her scrub the files because its illegal to use driver's license data to cross check with the voting files.

So there she sits with an illegal voting dilemma that is not necessarily fraudulent in a political sense, but does fan the GOP fires that Democrats are trying to steal elections.

About 75% of the school children across the country are already in school but not in Michigan, where the tourism industry has convinced lawmakers to delay the opening of school until after Labor Day.
