Estimated 1 million gallons leaks from water tank in Livonia

LIVONIA, Mich. (WJBK) -

A water tank in Livonia holding ten million gallons of water sprung a leak on Tuesday.   The tank is operated by the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department.  Around 10:30 a.m., the Detroit Central Services Facility sounded the alarm.  Something was wrong.

"I was very concerned, especially with all the water coming out," said Emma Teller.  "We could hear rumbling happening inside of the tank, so we were very concerned that the structure would collapse."

Crews estimated one million gallons of water leaked from the tank.

The leak was originally blamed on a faulty valve stuck in the open position, but SkyFox first on the scene discovered water leaking from multiple points in the structure, the tank so full the roof, which is normally flat, appeared to be a dome structure.  Livonia residents feared it would explode.

A spokesperson for Detroit Water and Sewerage said the structure was never in danger of collapsing because a hose was pumping water directly into the sewers.

"What they then did was de-pressurized the tank because the tank is pressurized, and what they're in the process of doing now is dewatering the site.  As far as we're aware, there has been no flooding.  No one is without water.  The water is safe, no boil water advisory alerts, and no one was injured," said Mary Alphonso.

Henry Binder said he served as a water and sewer commissioner in Livonia for the last three decades and he warned Detroit this structure was rusting.

"I called the water department in Detroit.  Okay, we're going to look into it, and that's all I ever heard," he said.  "Rust is a deteriorating material that will just weaken the joints, and it just gets worse and worse.  You don't ignore a problem like this."

The spokesperson said that she was unaware of any calls about rust to the structure.  Crews will now have to investigate and determine the structural integrity of this building.  Meanwhile, everyone feels they avoided a major disaster.
