Skubick: Group of GOP senators wants to disband pension tax on seniors

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) -

The governor must have a pretty good headache by now as members of his own party continue to stiff him on a variety of issues, and now comes a full blown migraine as five Republicans want to scrap the his pension tax on seniors.

Whatever happened to party loyalty?

Well you can carry your allegiance to your governor only so far until it gets in the way of your own re-election bid.

Here's the inside skinny.

Five GOP senators voted no on the pension tax when the governor proposed it two years ago, yet it passed.  Now as the gang-of-five prepare to run for office next year, they reemerge with this repeal effort which also includes scraping the governor's plan to eliminate the homestead property tax credit.

The timing on all this is transparent.  Many state taxpayers are just now discovering, as they labor away on their state tax returns, that 18 months ago they were hit with a tax on pensions and can no longer deduct a hefty credit for owning a home.  It's a back door tax increase.

Seeking an opportunity to exploit the howls coming from the kitchen table where tax returns are done are Senators Rick Jones (R-Eaton County), Jack Brandenburg and Tory Rocca (R-Macomb County) Joe Hune (R-Brighton) and David Hildenbrand (R-West Michigan.)

When your own neck is on the line it is actually quite easy to break with your governor.  Problem is it takes 20 votes to get 'er done.

There are 12 Democrats who just this week reminded taxpayers that the governor did this to them but that only gets you to 17.

Question:  Are there three more Republicans who might jump ship?

Answer: Yes.

Take Sen. Patrick Colbeck (R-Plymouth) whose anti-tax Tea Party credentials are impecible.

Or Sen. Mike Green (R-Mayville) who is running for his life next year.

Then there's David Robertson (R-Grand Blanc) who never saw a tax hike he didn't hate. And the list goes on.

The mutiny is not a done deal yet, but Captain Snyder better get on deck to kill this before he gets tossed overboard by his own "mates" ...again.

Oh boy, the anti-Granholm mob will have fun with this.  They are talking in California about running the former Michigan governor for something as part of the “new generation” of D’s on the west bank.
