Off-duty NYPD cop killed in LIE crash

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

An off-duty New York City police officer was killed in an early-morning crash on the Long Island Expressway, according to Suffolk County Police.

Joseph Pritchard, 30, of North Babylon, died when his 2008 Dodge pickup truck was rear-ended by a box truck near Exit 51 at about 2:23 a.m. March 25, 2013, Suffolk cops said.

Pritchard's truck was stopped in the right westbound lane before th collision, police said. Authorities do not know why he was stopped.

Pritchard died at the scene, according to the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

First responders brought the driver of the box truck, Eduardo Garcia, 34, of the Bronx, to Huntington Hospital, police said. His wounds were not considered life-threatening.

Police impounded both trucks and are investigating the crash.
