FOX 10 was proud to sponsor the 2013 Heart Walk this year, and we thank everyone who strapped on their tennis shoes and pounded the pavement today for heart health and stroke prevention.
10,000 people walked the walk and with Fox 10's Ron Hoon leading the way, they were talking the talk, loudly.
"One, two, three, let's beat heart disease!" everyone cheered.
The message was loud and clear at the American Heart Association's 2013 Heart Walk, that kicked off at Wesley Bolin Plaza at the State Capitol in Phoenix.
Heart disease and stroke are leading killers in Arizona. This event, which includes a 3 mile walk, raises money for the American Heart Association's research and education programs.
If you missed the walk – here's some quick advice from the 2013 Heart Walk chairman on what you can do to fight heart disease and stroke.
"Just 30 minutes of exercise every day can help dramatically reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke, so get out there, get with friends, get some exercise in every day. Eat well, take care of yourself, there are a lot of things you can do," says Tim Bricker, president of Chandler Regional & Mercy Gilbert.
Why is that so important? Consider these numbers -- here in Phoenix, heart disease and stroke account for about one of every three deaths.
And every 25 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a coronary event.
