KIRA TREVINO MURDER: 'Item of interest' was bag containing bloody evidence

Posted: Updated:

Nearly a week after a volunteer spotted an "item of interest" on Keller Lake in Maplewood, Minn., authorities are now releasing details about what they found -- a plastic bag containing bloody evidence that matches Kira Trevino's DNA.

Trevino, 30, has been missing since Feb. 21 and presumed dead. Her husband, Jeffery Trevino, remains jailed on murder charges.

Without a body, Kira Trevino is still listed as missing, but amended charges posted Friday show investigators have some solid evidence that may eventually lead to Kira Trevino's remains.

A volunteer search of Keller Lake found a plastic bag tied shut. Inside the bag, police recovered a bloody pillow and pillow case, a sports bra, shirt and sponge. The blood on the pillow was tested and was found to belong to Kira Trevino.

On Sunday, dozens of volunteers continued their search near the lake. Police confirm they did recover additional evidence, but they declined to comment on what it was or explain how it was connected to Kira Trevino's disappearance.

The search around Keller Lake, which is about 1.8 miles from the Trevinos' home, began after a tipster reported seeing two men struggling to carry something that looked to be about the same size as a body wrapped in something.

Searchers used sticks to poke through the snow in an attempt to find anything that may be buried underneath; however, volunteers were warned not to go out onto the ice due to changing weather conditions.

On Tuesday, dogs trained to detect dead bodies were brought to Keller Lake and reacted positively to a hole cut in the ice, possibly indicating a cadaver in the lake. About eight divers were rotated in and out of the frigid waters as they searched a 40 to 45 foot radius; however, that search wrapped up with no additional finds.

Charging documents allege Jeffery Trevino killed his wife inside in the couple's home on Iowa Street in St. Paul. Investigators believe he then put her body in the trunk of her own car and dumped it in Keller Lake before ditching the car in the Mall of America parking ramp.

In addition to that bag of evidence, amended charges filed on Friday also reveal that a neighbor of Trevino has a rotating surveillance camera that allegedly captured Jeffery Trevino getting out of a taxi and walking toward his house after leaving Kira's car at Mall of America.

This weekend's searches took place at the following locations:

- 10 a.m. Saturday, Keller Lake, 2166 Maplewood Drive, Maplewood

- 2 p.m. Saturday, Beaver Lake, 1050 Edgewater Blvd., St. Paul

- 10 a.m. Sunday, Keller Lake, 2166 Maplewood Drive, Maplewood

- 2 p.m. Sunday, Round Lake in Maplewood. There are parking lots on Frost Avenue and Phalen Drive, both near Arcade Street

- 2 p.m. Sunday, Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge from 86th Street to Minnesota 77 in Bloomington
