DETROIT (WJBK) -

An undercover sting ended in gunfire and a crash in Detroit.  Investigators were in the middle of making an arrest when we're told one of the suspects took off.  Now one suspect is in custody and the other is in the hospital.

Police said the two suspects were being investigated for fraud -- ordering more than $30,000 in auto parts from six car dealerships, including Marty Feldman Chevrolet in Novi, and then buying them with bad checks and credit cards.

"They're reselling the parts on the street for a much higher cost, and obviously they're getting them for virtually free," said Novi Police Chief David Malloy.

A Secret Service task force made up of federal agents, Novi and state police set up an undercover buy Thursday morning at Warren and Grandville on Detroit's northwest side.  After the transaction was complete, officers attempted to arrest the suspects.  Malloy said a 40-year-old man surrendered.  The other suspect ran to his vehicle and used it as a weapon to try and get away.  A Novi police officer fired at the Ford Expedition, striking the suspect as he tried to flee the scene.

"Intentionally was driving at the officer in an attempt to pin him between his vehicle and the building.  The officer pulled his service revolver and [fearing] for his life, fired shots at the suspect vehicle," Malloy said.

The man that was shot drove a couple miles from Warren and Grandville to Plymouth and Piedmont.  We're told he got out of the vehicle after hitting a fence.  He tried to run all the way around the block, but eventually was caught on the corner.

A trail of blood tracked the suspect's steps, his scarf left where police took him into custody.  The 37-year-old remains in the hospital in critical condition.  The Novi officer involved in the shooting is being investigated by Detroit Police.

This task force was able to nab the two alleged main players in this operation, who investigators believe had been committing fraud for months.  State and federal charges are expected.
