SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (FOX13) -
DeSoto County Sheriff Deputy Mike Cowan was airlifted to The MED in Memphis after a motorcycle accident on Church Road and Airways Boulevard in Southaven, Miss., Wednesday afternoon.
The DeSoto County Sheriff's Office tell FOX13 that Cowan was driving with the rest of the sheriff office's motorcycle unit when a vehicle making a turn hit Cowan's motorcycle.
"It looks like the driver turned a little too prematurely and hit the last officer in the pack of motorcycles," said Southaven Police Deputy Chief Steve Pirtle.
It happened around 12:45 p.m. when the unit was on the way to gas up the motorcycles following practice for a Make-A-Wish fundraiser the office is organizing this weekend.
Cowan's right arm and leg were broken in the accident. Around 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sheriff Bill Rasco said Cowan had a clean MRI scan and would have surgery to clean up his broken leg.
"I can't say enough about Mike," says Rasco, "He's in great physical shape but it's going to take him a while to get over this. But we'll make it. He's got some pretty good gashes in his leg and in his arm, but we just ask for your prayers."
Cowan has been a motorcycle deputy for five years.
The driver in this accident did not suffer any injuries, police said.
The accident remains under investigation.
