Poll: opposition lessening to Internet bets in NJ

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) -- More New Jerseyans oppose Internet gambling than support it, although the numbers are getting closer.

Fairleigh Dickinson University PublicMind releases a poll Wednesday that finds 46 percent of respondents oppose the state's recent decision to legalize Internet betting, with 41 percent favoring it.

That's down significantly from just two years ago, when 67 percent of respondents to the poll said they were against Internet gambling.

Gov. Chris Christie signed an Internet gambling bill into law last month, but online betting has not yet begun in New Jersey.

The poll also finds most respondents feel individual states are better suited to decide whether they should be able to offer legal sports betting rather than the federal government, which controls it through a 1992 law that New Jersey is trying to overturn.
