Tigers jet for Detroit, NCAA tourney

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

Midwest bracket sixth-seeded Memphis boarded a jet and flew to Detroit on Tuesday in preparation for its first game in the 2013 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.

The Tigers (30-4) will face St. Mary's (Calif.) on Thursday in a 1:45 p.m. CDT game at the Palace of Auburn Hills in northern Detroit.

The 11th-seeded Gaels (28-6) defeated Middle Tennessee State 67-54 in the first round of the tournament Tuesday evening at the University of Dayton.

While nationally the thinking is Memphis should be on upset alert, the Tigers aren't worried about what the so-called experts are saying. The team is led by upper classmen who have two years of early tournament exits on their minds as they get ready for this year's big dance.

This core junior group came together three years ago with hopes of winning a national title, which makes this tournament run means so much.

The winner of the Memphis-St. Mary's game will face the winner of the Michigan State-Valparaiso game on Saturday, March 23.
