Parents: UWS school playground is dangerous

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Parents say a playground at playground at P.S. 166 on the Upper West Side of Manhattan is hazardous to their children's health.

Christine Dipasquale, the president of PTA at the school, says in the last year and a half there have been four concussions, some broken arms, and other injuries. She says the playground's old cobblestones and steep slope cause kids to trip, loose their balance, and ultimately fall down. Those falls have resulted in numerous serious injuries.

The city's Parks Department says the playground was last rebuilt in 2000. A Parks Department spokesperson says the city is completing a contract to renovate the playground and "smooth out the two-level area with cobblestones."

But Councilwoman Gale Brewer, who represents the Upper West Side, says that project is planned for the summer of 2014, when it needs to be done as soon as possible. She says she is pushing for the project to be completed summer 2013. She says that if necessary the project can be pushed forward with an emergency contract.
