HALL COUNTY, Ga. -

A young hero who ran into a burning building to save an elderly blind man two years wants to become an official firefighter.

Tray Ross, 21, knows what it takes to be a firefighter. In November 2011, he didn't hesitate to leap into action after she saw smoke rising from a home.

Ross through the smoke and rescued 76-year-old Harold John, who is blind and couldn't make it out alone.

"I kept telling him, 'Come on, I got the door open, get out.' He just kept telling me he couldn't so I went in after him," Ross said.

Ross said it was instinct that led him into the burning building.

"I know this is what I'm supposed to do," he said.

It was at that moment that Ross decided to pursue his dream.

Hall County heard about his heroics and helped him get his required GED. Now, Ross is a joining other Hall County Fire Department recruits.

Over the next 16 weeks, the 19 recruits will do hands-on and classroom training, but the instructors already know that Ross has what it takes to be a firefighter: guts and desire.

"He cares about his fellow human man. And if you have that and you're physically able and you have the desire, we can do it from there," said Captain Skip Heflin of the Hall County Fire Department.

After rescuing him, Ross visited Johnson in the hospital, who had to be treated for smoke inhalation.  The two even shared Thanksgiving dinner together.
