Romulus man killed in mobile home fire

ROMULUS, Mich. (WJBK) -

Romulus Fire Lt. John Thiedt has confirmed a man died Sunday afternoon, following a fire inside a mobile home on Metro Street.

We're told the man was rushed to the emergency room at Oakwood Annapolis Hospital in Wayne with critical burns, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

This is the second fatal fire in the city this weekend.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, however family told Fox 2 the victim often smoked while using his oxygen tank.

"He heard three humongous explosions and he thought someone was throwing something at his trailer...and he's two streets over," said neighbor Chris Check, referring to another neighbor who was home at the time the fire started. "There were two more explosions and it blew right up into the sky...he could see the flames and smoke.

Lt. Thiedt said the flames were so intense, firefighters worried they might spread to neighboring homes.

Neighbors and family members arrived on the scene just as the victim was being removed the charred trailer.

"They were putting him into a sheet to transfer him to the ambulance," said neighbor Ada Jackman. "He was charred from the stomach up...he didn't look good."

"He was totally black. We kept calling his name, but he wouldn't answer," said family member Amy Morris, fighting back tears.

Romulus Fire responded to another fatal fire Friday night on Harrison Street. In that fire, witnesses also describe hearing an explosion. A 38 year-old man was killed after his 18 year-old son reported there was an explosion in the basement.
