TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - An Arizona couple is facing murder and child abuse charges after their twin 18-month-old daughters were found suffering from severe trauma.

Tucson police spokesman Sgt. Chris Widmer says 1 of the twins was transported to a local hospital after she was found not breathing. She ended up dying the next day.

The other twin remains hospitalized in serious condition but is expected to survive.

Police identified the parents as 25-year-old Kristepher Benavidez and 30-year-old Monique Gaxiola. Both were booked into the Pima County Jail.

Authorities were first called to the family's home Wednesday afternoon. Detectives allege that the father had been physically abusing the twins and that the mother did not report it.

Widmer says detectives are continuing to investigate.
