PHOENIX -

There was a bloody trail on a Phoenix sidewalk Saturday afternoon after a pit bull attacked three people, including two children.

A witness says the children were playing outside when they were attacked by the dog.

The witness says that dog also bit the victim's older brother and grandfather who tried to step in to help.

12-year-old Edgar Portillo identified a pit bull he says bit three people, including two children, Saturday afternoon.

Portillo says he was with the children playing in the alley behind his house near Buckeye and 35th Avenue when the pit bull came after them.

He said the dog was hiding under a trailer.

"Yeah, for no reason it attacked all of them," said Portillo.

Blood spatter dotted the sidewalk leading to the victim's house.

Portillo says the dog bit a 9-year old boy, then bit his 12-year-old brother and their 57-year-old grandfather who stepped in to help.

"My friend got bit right here, his grandpa wanted to protect him and he got bit in the arm," said Portillo.

The owners of the dog weren't home, but we're told the pit bull typically stays behind a locked gate. Apparently, someone left it open when they were doing work on the house.

Within an hour of the attack, animal control had control of the pit bull, officers say.

There were no signs of aggression and it appears to be up to date on it's shots.

However, it will be quarantined for 10 days before it can be returned to it's owner.

There's no word on the extent of the victim's injuries.

The owners told animal control they want the dog back after it's quarantined.

Animal control says there have been 789 dog bites reported so far this year.
