An off-duty 47-year-old Memphis police officer was arrested late Thursday evening after a reported domestic assault against his girlfriend over the volume of a car radio, police said.
Officer Lazarus Settle was charged with simple assault domestic violence after he got into an argument with his 44-year-old girlfriend that escalated into a physical altercation.
The incident took place in the 2800 block of Old Austin Peay at around 11:40 p.m.
Officer Settles has been relieved of duty, police said.
According to a police report, the female victim advised police that during the disagreement over the car radio volume Officer Settle requested that the victim exit his vehicle at which time she took the keys out of the ignition of the vehicle. Settle forced her out of the vehicle and also exited the vehicle. While they fought over the keys, both the victim and Settle fell down the hill causing minor cuts and scratches.
Police said both the victim and the off-duty officer had been drinking earlier in the evening prior to the argument. In addition to being charged with simple domestic assault, he was also charged with DIU and refusing to submit to a blood alcohol content breathalyzer test.
Officer Settles has been with Memphis police since January 2009 and is assigned to the Ridgeway precinct.
