Utah court says judge mishandled polygamous trust

Posted: Updated:

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The Utah Supreme Court says a lower court judge didn't meet the stated goals of a trust created to hold property owned by a polygamous sect led by the jailed-Warren Jeffs.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that trust was designed to advance the goals of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints religion, and provide for the just wants and needs of the members.

The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that 3rd District Judge Denise Lindberg only addressed the second goal, making the trust secular.

Though the ruling may provide some vindication for members of the FLDS, it has no actual impact because nobody challenged the ruling by the deadline.

The trust holds about $100 million worth of homes and properties belonging to current and former FLDS members in two towns on the Utah-Arizona border.
