CLAYTON, N.J. -

A miniature pincher beaten, strangled and left for dead inside of a recycling container along Clinton Avenue in Clayton, New Jersey has become an inspiration to his caregivers.

"Beacon" was found last month by a mail carrier who heard his cries. The dog was left in front of an abandoned home.

Beacon was taken to Clayton Veterinary Associates, where on Tuesday, FOX 29 was there to see the dog take his first steps since the vicious attack.

"The first day, he had a gash on the top of his head where they hit him and the next day, all of the bruising and swelling showed up around his neck, so it was obvious that they tried to strangle him," Dr. Judy Morgan said.

Morgan's team is providing Beacon with laser treatment to ease the pain and swimming-based physical therapy for his muscles.

Dr. Morgan says she named him Beacon after seeing a sign that honored 12-year-old Autumn Pasquale, who was murdered last year.

"As I was passing all of the Autumn's light signs on the way home, I said, 'this little guy is the beacon of light we have for all of the animals and if he survives, then it's a plus.'"
