DETROIT (WJBK) -
A white Buick that transported Kwame Kilpatrick to the federal courthouse Monday morning arrived back at his mother's house after the verdict with his grandfather and other relatives. One family member shouted at reporters to stay away.
"No comment," said Raymond Cheeks, the former mayor's uncle. "You can stand out here all day long. We have no comment."
Someone called police after that brief statement was made. We watched two officers walk up to the front door of Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick's house, speak briefly with someone inside, and then return to their patrol cars.
We next saw Kilpatrick's grandfather and other relatives leave. At one point, a pickup truck carrying relatives intentionally peeled out and sped down the street.
A few hours later after Kilpatrick was sent to prison, his uncle returned along with Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick. She didn't comment, but Raymond Cheeks told me justice was not served in this case.
"The jury got it wrong. The prosecution got it wrong. The man's done nothing," he said.
Raymond Cheeks went on to say he has talked to Kilpatrick's three sons.
"They feel very sad. It's a very big blow for them and an extremely big blow for the City of Detroit. The City of Detroit will now be destroyed," he said.
When pressed for the reasoning behind the Detroit comment, he offered, "Read your Bible. Sodom and Gomorrah."
Also spotted at the house was a photographer, who appeared to be with the Kilpatrick family videotaping the scene, and a Kilpatrick supporter, who tied balloons to a tree in the front yard.
"I just believe that he did a lot [more] good than harm, and he wasn't the only one in corruption," said Gwen Christian.
Late Monday afternoon, the judge ordered Kwame Kilpatrick and his friend Bobby Ferguson straight to prison. It could be a decade or more before he returns to his mother's house where he had been confined and on a tether since January for violating his parole. His wife and three sons remain in Texas.
