2 Drivers Flee Scene Of New Castle 5-Car Accident

Posted: Updated:

State police in New Castle, Delaware are searching for two drivers who were involved in a five-car crash that left a 52-year-old motorcyclist seriously injured over the weekend.

The crash happened at the intersection of Airport Road and Cawdor Lane Saturday night, just before 6:30 p.m.

According to police, the motorcycle was headed southbound on Airport Road in front of a Chrysler 300 as a Ford Taurus was heading northbound.

As all three approached Cawdor Lane, police say a red vehicle described possibly as a Nissan Altima failed to remain stopped at a stop sign, entered the road and collided with the Taurus.

Attempting to avoid the crash, police say the motorcycle, driven by 52-year-old Ralph Heaps of Wilmington, struck the Taurus head-on.

Heaps was thrown from his bike onto the northbound lanes, where he was hit by a car that was traveling behind the Taurus.

Police say the unknown vehicle fled the scene.

After the collision with Heaps' motorcycle, police say the Taurus crossed the center line and collided head-on with the Chrysler, which had been traveling southbound.

Police say the red car fled the scene.

Heaps was rushed to Christiana Hospital's Trauma Center, where he was admitted in serious condition, according to police.

Heaps was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The driver of the Taurus was also taken to Christiana Hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the Chrysler was not injured, police said.

The crash kept the area around the intersection closed for three hours.
