6-year-old with life-threatening disease wishes to join police squad

PHOENIX -

A valley 6-year-old diagnosed with a life-threatening disease had only one wish: join a police squad.

At Tempe Marketplace Sunday, hundreds gathered for the 2013 Walk for Wishes, raising funds to make wishes possible for sick children like Darrius Lee.

Darrius has a sickle cell disease and before the walk started, he received a very big surprise.

Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Phoenix Police Department were happy to help Darrius when he told the foundation about a very specific wish.

He wanted to drink coffee and eat donuts with a police squad, see bodily contact and catch bad guys.

"When we heard that Darrius Lee wanted to be a police officer, you know, we couldn't jump at that opportunity quick enough," said Phoenix Police Chief Daniel Garcia.

Andrea Lee was overwhelmed by the support and generosity from the Phoenix Police.

"Today was actually overwhelming, it was amazing how all the police officers came out, how they gave him a uniform and they swore him in. I had to really hold back," said Andrea Lee.

Darrius is excited about his wish coming true and is already planning out what he will do.

"First we're gonna eat donuts and we're gonna catch some bad guys, we get to arrest and go to jail with handcuffs," said Darrius Lee.

Little does he know, this honorary officer will be doing so much more.

"We're gonna allow him to visit and have a demonstration with our K9 unit, he's gonna ride in a police car with us and see what that feels like and more important today was just allowing him to wear our uniform," said Garcia.

"it gives me hope, it does, it really gives me hope. All the good energy, I believe, just feed more good energy so it just gives me hope and helps me to rest better knowing that okay, another day will be a little bit better for him," said Andrea Lee.

Make-A-Wish Foundation raised thousands at Sunday's walk that will help other kids' wishes come true just like Darrius.

Darrius will also visit the police academy, where they will start the day by eating donuts.
