PONTIAC, Mich. (WJBK) -

The husband of the 75-year-old grandmother accused of shooting and killing her grandson took the stand for the prosecution on Friday.  He testified that he didn't even know his wife owned a gun, and that she told him to walk the dog right before the shooting.

Sandra Layne didn't show much emotion in court.  She smiled at a couple of people in the audience, but for the most part was stone faced when her husband took the stand despite a small tear at the very beginning.

"She was just trying to do her duty as a grandma and get him through high school," Fred Layne testified.

"You think she loved him?" he was asked.

"She would do anything in the world for that kid," he replied.

The husband described what it was like to have Jonathan Hoffman living with them in the house, the circle of friends he hung out with at the alternative school he attended, and how his wife tried to shelter him from some of her dealings with Hoffman.

"Whenever she had a problem, I said send the kid back to his parents.  We don't have to put up with this," Fred Layne said.

"How often did you say that?" he was asked.

"A number of times.  Ten times," he answered.

"At least?" he was questioned.

"Yes, at least," he said.

The 17-year-old was staying with his grandparents because his own parents were in the process of a divorce and had moved to Arizona.

While Fred Layne seemed to contradict himself at times, he was quick to point out that he is 87 years old and his memory was much better at the time of the May 18 shooting.  He told the court that his wife was frightened of her grandson, even though she never mentioned him by name.

Sandra Layne's husband was not home when the shooting took place because, according to him, she had asked him to leave.  He also had no idea she owned a gun.

"I was flabbergasted," Fred Layne said.

"Flabbergasted meaning what?" he was asked.

"Thinking that Jonathan had the gun," he replied.

"So you were surprised that, in fact, it was your wife?  Is that correct?" he was further asked.

"Yes," he said.

The jury also heard from one of Hoffman's friends late in the day, who described the pair's final conversations, including the fact that Hoffman had admitted to him he smoked Spice the night before the shooting and had failed a drug test just hours before he died.

"He just sounded scared.  He sounded pretty scared.  He told me he was going to go to jail," said Max Dashevsky.  "He didn't sound high.  He didn't sound angry.  He sounded completely sober.  He sounded scared and upset."

That friend also testified that Hoffman never expressed any ill feelings about his relationship with his grandmother, at least to him.

We also heard from the man that sold Sandra Layne the gun.  She apparently said she needed it for home protection.

Sometime on Tuesday, Sandra Layne is expected to take the stand in her own defense.
