The Shelby County Sheriff's Office says a man whose car had a flat tire has been critically injured in a crash that severed his legs.
Sheriff's officials said 38-year-old Michael Owens had a flat after dark Wednesday night and called a friend to come and help him. Investigators said the friend parked behind Owens' disabled car and, while Owens was standing at the trunk of his car, a pickup truck plowed into the back of his friend's vehicle. The impact drove the car forward into Owens, severing his legs and pinning him under the vehicle.
Owens was airlifted to the Regional Medical Center in extremely critical condition, but was expected Thursday morning to survive his injuries.
The crash is under investigation, but deputies said speed was not a factor.
