There was a surprise announcement from Mayor Dave Bing on Wednesday. He is done fighting to keep an emergency financial manager out of Detroit. However, council is refusing to give up the challenge to what they call a state takeover.
"We need to stop BS'ing ourselves, quite frankly, and get on with this because all we're going to do is hurt the citizens of Detroit," Bing said.
It came out of nowhere in a last minute press conference. Mayor Bing said he will not support an appeal of an emergency financial manager.
On Thursday, Senator Coleman A. Young II offered a response to Bing's position:
Senator Coleman A. Young II (D-Detroit) issued the following statement in reaction to Detroit Mayor Dave Bing's announcement the he would not protest the appointment of an Emergency Manager.
"If Mayor Bing isn't going to stand and fight for the people in their most dire hour then what is he there for? He might as well support the Emergency Manager. If Mayor Bing is going to lie down and roll over, he needs to resign because he's not willing to protect the people he was elected to serve. We need a Mayor who will stand and fight not whimper and cower."
Detroit is facing a $327 million budget deficit.
Snyder agreed with a review team's report on Detroit's financial emergency. He prescheduled a hearing date for Tuesday in case his decision was appealed.
