NORRISTOWN, Pa. -

A 19-year-old jaguar passed away from complications from kidney failure and cancer late last month at the Elmwood Park Zoo, officials announced Tuesday.

"Anasazi" was being treated for kidney disease with special diets and medications for much of the past year, but recently, zoo staff noticed a sudden decline in his condition.

The jaguar died on his own last Thursday.

Anasazi was born in Maryland at the Catoctin Wildlife Preserve in May of 1993. About a year later, in 1994, he arrived at the Elmwood park Zoo and quickly became a favorite among zoo staff and visitors.

The excitement that surrounded the jaguar was captured by artists in a logo that is still used by the zoo.

In 1996, the zoo acquired a female jaguar that zoo staff hoped would breed with Anasazi, but plans were halted due to a lack of information regarding his lineage. Still, the zoo says Anasazi and "Cali" remained close companions.

Zoo officials say there are no immediate plans to add another jaguar to the exhibit.
