Will you be taking the 'Shred' Challenge?

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

He's helped celebrities lose weight & he's led millions on weight loss challenges.  Now, Dr. Ian Smith has a new book to get folks motivated and shred the pounds.  It's the #1 diet book in the country:  SHRED: The Revolutionary Diet!  Lose 20 lbs in 6 weeks or 4" or 2 sizes.

VALERIE CALHOUN:

20 lbs in 6 weeks, how?

DR. IAN SMITH:

You know it is amazing.  Over the summer I was Tweeting out to my followers a simple program to lose weight.  By the end of the summer we had over 5,000 people on Twitter and Facebook that lost, in 6 weeks, an average of 20 lbs., 4", 2 sizes.  Listen, I have 3 rules when it comes to losing weight:

  1.  It should not be expensive
  2. It should not be complicated
  3. You should not ask people to eat perfectly

Shred is a program that says you eat 4 meals a day.  You have 3 snack options.  You're never hungry, its regular inexpensive food you can buy in any grocery store and you eat every 3-4 hours.  By eating every 3-4 hours, it keeps your metabolism high but it also keeps your insulin levels-your hormone levels nice and stable to prevent those spikes that cause weight gain.

The other thing is called diet confusion and that is just like muscle confusion for weight lifters; in diet confusion we change the types of food you eat, the calories that you consume day to day-week to week and that will also keep your body off kilter and keep you burning calories.  People love the program because its simple and it's a lifestyle plan.

VALERIE CALHOUN:

What I like about it is I'm skimming thru the book is that you lay it out, every single day- week by week, what to eat and when to eat it.  You take the guess work out of it for us.

DR. IAN SMITH:

What I have learned from doing this a very long time, people want some kind of simple directions.  But, there is also flexibility.  If you're a diabetic, vegan, a vegetarian, you can actually change meals in and out or make substitutions.  So, it's a very accommodating program but it's also very portable.  For people that are busy or always on the go, you can switch your meals.  You can have soup, smoothies and shakes sometimes if you can't sit down for a real meal.  But most importantly, people love that is a do-able plan and it's honest.  You can have, sometimes, pancakes and bacon in the morning or you can have grits.  Regular food but we teach you how to eat it in a healthier way.

VALERIE CAHOUN:

So who's this for?  Is this for someone who has 100 lbs. to loose or someone who has 20 lbs.?

DR. IAN SMITH:

Well it's interesting, this is for everybody.  I found in our test subjects that people that were losing the last 20 lbs. did extremely well.  But we have people that are down 70 lbs. already since the summer.  So it's a wide range of people, but it is for people who really want a program that's do-able.  It's not a diet.  It really is a lifestyle plan.

VALERIE CAHOUN:

It appears to be just that.  I was looking in the back of the book; you have the recipes for a lot of things like your lentil soup and some beef soup, all in the back.

DR. IAN SMITH:

Well the idea is very simple; people want a program that they can do so a lot of the smoothies, shakes and soups are made in 30 minutes or less.  In fact, entire families have gone on the Shred diet.  You were talking earlier this morning about the children not being healthy and the letter to the parents.  This program, Shred, has helped families because it is a way of eating for everyone.  It's regular food.  It's turkey, its chicken, its fish.  It's nothing special, it's nothing extraordinary…the whole family can enjoy it.

VALERIE CALHOUN:

You know Memphis is one of the fattest cities in the nation.  We get that title virtually every year.  You told me you want to come back to Memphis; you want to get some Memphians on this diet.  Tell us about that, is it a challenge?  Like a Memphis fit challenge?

DR. IAN SMITH:

Yes, let's call it that.  So this is what we are going to do, we are going to challenge Memphis to go on the Shred Diet.  It's a 6 week cycle program, so I will come back in 6 weeks on air.  Bring some Memphians who have lost some weight  and had some great experience.  If you want to come on the challenge, just go to our Facebook page Shredder Nation or Tweet me @doctoriansmith.  But get the Shred Diet book and Tweet us or myfoxmemphis and we will get you on the station.  We will have people come on and talk about the success of a lot of Memphians.

VALERIE CALHOUN:

You want people to take before and after pictures too?

DR. IAN SMITH:

That would be a lot of fun.  I want this to be interactive.  Remember, people who lose the most weight and keep it off the longest is those who have the support system.  So the more Memphians that we can get to get on the Shred Challenge, we'll come back.  Hey, maybe you can be our captain!
