Homicide detectives have filed murder charges against 47-year-old James Scott and another man for the shooting death of his cousin, 55-year-old Gregory Scott.
Police say the two relatives had a long history of "bad blood."
Police say they have also filed charges against 25-year-old James Hiller in connection to Scott's death.
"That was our brother. Our children are hurting" said one friend who attended a prayer vigil on the 200 Block of Millick Street, where the victim lived.
Neighbors were seen on Thursday using hoses and brushes to wash away the blood spilled on to the street.
"We will uphold his memory in a great and godly way," said one neighbor.
Dozens stood on the corner telling stories and remembering the Scott who was a leader with the Buccaneer Gold Coast Drill team, a mentor program for local children. Now, he's Philadelphia's latest murder victim.
"I don't think it's sunk in yet" said friend Ed Obeida.
Police say on Wednesday night James Scott and Gregory Scott had a fight outside the family deli on 52nd and Delancey Streets. Investigators say less than an hour later, James Scott waited for his cousin to arrive back home for revenge. When Gregory arrived, police say his cousin shot him multiple times in the face. His car keys still in his hand when he died.
Scott is being remembered as a community hero for kids.
"He didn't want them (kids) to fall subject to the streets. To the drugs. To the mayhem. He wanted to save our kids," said friend Brenda Daniels.
Scott was also a personal friend of City Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell, who called for bold steps to curb gun violence.
"I just want guns out of the hands of everyone except for law enforcement officers. And I think the world would be a better place," said Blackwell.
James Scott was being held without bail. He has a criminal record, including charges of drug possession.
