MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

Eight Ross Elementary students who passed around a loaded handgun inside the school and caused a brief lockdown of the school are being recommended for expulsion, Memphis City Schools officials said on Thursday.

The students range in age between 7 and 10 and are in second, third and fourth grades at the elementary school, located in the southeast part of Memphis.

A zero tolerance policy states that any MCS student determined to have brought a weapon to school or be in possession of a weapon at school should be expelled for one calendar year.

The boys were given juvenile summons, but don't have a date schedule to appear before a juvenile court judge.

District officials would not comment on the boys' supervision or say how the boys were able to pass the loaded weapon around on school grounds.

It was initially reported that a 7-year-old brought the loaded gun to school on Tuesday. The school went under a brief lockdown and teachers shielded their students inside classrooms during the lockdown.

A 10-year-old was the last student to handle the loaded weapon and was arrested.

The incident remains under investigation by Memphis police. It is unclear if the parents or guardians of the student who brought the loaded gun to school will face any charges.

The Shelby County District Attorney's Office told FOX13 News it will determine what will happen once the police investigation is complete.

Two Memphis adults were charged with reckless homicide and reckless endangerment after the mother's 4-year-old child accidentally died in January after playing with a loaded handgun.
